You’re Getting Interviews. But Not Getting Offers. Here’s Why.
Apr 01, 2026
I’m taking a quick break from corporate escapes to talk about the other side of my work.
If you’ve been getting interviews but not offers, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common frustrations I hear from mid-career professionals.
You know you’re qualified. You’ve led teams. You’ve delivered results.
So why does it feel like you’re not getting through?
In many cases, the issue isn’t your experience. It’s how you’re communicating it.
The Problem I See Over and Over Again
Over the course of my corporate career, I interviewed hundreds of candidates. Today, I coach mid-career professionals, many in their 40s and 50s, who are trying to land their next role.
The biggest mistake I see is this:
Experienced leaders are not clearly communicating their leadership in interviews.
Instead, they default to answers like:
- “We worked on…”
- “My team delivered…”
- “We implemented…”
Collaboration matters. No question.
But in an interview, the hiring team is not evaluating your team. They are evaluating you.
They need to understand:
- How you led
- Where you stepped in
- What decisions you made
- Why your leadership mattered
If that is not clear, it becomes difficult to justify hiring you into a leadership role.
Why This Shows Up Mid-Career
By the time you have 10, 15, or 20 years of experience, your leadership becomes second nature.
You stop thinking about what makes you different.
You start speaking in terms of “we” because that is how you operate day to day.
The problem is that you have outgrown the way you were taught to interview, and no one told you.
What once worked now makes you sound:
- Collaborative, but not distinctive
- Experienced, but not clearly impactful
Where the STAR Method Falls Short
The STAR method is widely used for a reason. It provides structure and helps early-career professionals organize their thoughts.
It focuses on:
- Situation
- Task
- Action
- Result
The issue is that it often keeps experienced professionals focused on execution rather than leadership.
What gets lost is:
- Your decision-making
- Your influence
- Your impact at a higher level
As a result, you can come across as someone who contributes rather than someone who leads.
What Hiring Managers Are Really Listening For
When I sit on an interview panel, I am not just checking whether someone can do the job.
I am evaluating:
- Can this person lead at the next level?
- Do they take ownership of outcomes?
- Can they make decisions under pressure?
- Do they create meaningful results?
If your answers do not clearly demonstrate those things, you blend in with other qualified candidates.
And blending in rarely leads to an offer.
A Better Way to Structure Your Answers
This is exactly why I created the SLAY Method™.
It builds on the structure people are familiar with, but shifts the focus to leadership and impact:
- Situation: Set the context
- Leadership: Where you stepped in, influenced, or made key decisions
- Action: What you did
- Your Impact: The result and why it mattered
This is a small shift in structure, but it creates a much stronger impression in an interview.
Why I Built Career Sherpa AI
I built Career Sherpa AI specifically for mid-career professionals.
People with real experience, real leadership, and real results who were not translating that into interviews in a way that landed.
I kept meeting people who were months into a job search, frustrated, and starting to question themselves.
Many had already gone through outplacement services after a layoff and were still not getting traction.
The issue was not capability. It was communication.
They were not telling their story in a way that made their leadership clear and compelling.
Career Sherpa AI helps you:
- Rewrite your interview answers using the SLAY Method
- Clearly communicate your leadership
- Move faster and with more confidence
Why This Matters More Than Ever
I still work with clients who are landing new roles, getting promoted, and growing as leaders.
Because financial security matters.
It gives you options.
It gives you leverage.
It gives you the ability to make your next move on your terms.
Whether that is advancing in your career or building something of your own.
Bottom Line
The STAR method is not wrong. It is simply not enough for experienced professionals.
If you are not clearly communicating your leadership, you will continue to be overlooked by candidates who are.
